What Makes a Museum?

How does a private passion for art serve a public purpose?

JSW Foundation is a generous patron of the arts in India and holds a formidable collection of post-Independence Indian art. In an effort to make the works more accessible to a wider public the foundation wanted to establish a contemporary art museum in Mumbai. Our role was to facilitate this vision by opening up the museum planning process.

The process of consultation with the client took on the shape of a report that details the different facets of establishing and administering an art museum. Supplemented by case studies that consider success stories from around the world and succinct information graphics that elucidate complex ideas, the report titled What Makes A Museum de-mystifies the idea of a museum as an institution.
